Carol Timoffee Receives 2017 Community Matters Award

The Abbotsford Board of Education awarded Carol Timoffee as the 2017 recipient for the Community Matters Award at last night’s public Board meeting. Nominated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley, Ms. Timoffee has volunteered as in In-School Mentor across the Abbotsford School District for the past 18 years.

“There are individuals throughout our district who spend time with our students on a regular basis, engaging and preparing them for a lifetime of success. Carol’s long service and dedication to our young people exemplifies the commitment to student success we share with our local community partners,” said Shirley Wilson, Chair for the Board of Education.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring program provides girls and boys with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with, within school grounds. For one hour a week, mentors meet with their mentee and engage in activities such as board games, crafts or just hang out in the playground.

In the nomination for Ms. Timoffee, Carrie Yargeau, Mentoring Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters noted “Carol is one of our most dependable, caring, and nurturing mentors. Carol is a strong advocate for our agency mission, believing in the power of mentoring and bringing our mission alive in the friendships she has with the Abbotsford students she has been matched with. She is always welcomed and highly regarded in the schools she volunteers in. Her warm, genuine and accepting spirit shines through in her role as a mentor and in the connections she’s developed with the students.”

The Board of Education established the annual award in 2015 to recognize community partners and/or individuals who have made a significant contribution to the lives of students in the Abbotsford School District.
